DANCING THE
HORIZONTAL

A British Council funded residency hosted by Centro Per La Scena Contemporanea / Opera Estate (Italy) and Yorkshire Dance (UK). We spent two weeks in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, researching co-creation in public spaces with a group of ‘non-professional’ performers aged 50+ which culminated in a public sharing in a local park. We then continued the research in Leeds in an artistic exchange with Italian artist Silvia Gribaudi. The project invited people who normally have little access to dance to experience its transformational power. To find connection, joy, self-expression and insight. To make visible, empower and tell untold stories. The aim was to shift perceptions of hierarchies, challenging ingrained attitudes towards community and professional practice and enabling the real-life realities of participants to expand choreographic work.
